Spin-In for St. Distaff Day
January 12 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Come out to a workshop to celebrate the ancient art of spinning (as in weaving, not stationary bikes)
St. Distaff Day was a special day during Medieval times – the first day after the twelve days of Christmas, when women would return to work, resuming their household duties including spinning. The name of this day isn’t after an actual Saint but rather after the distaff: a tool used to wrap fiber to keep it out of the way while spinning. This handy tool became the symbol of the importance of spinning during this period when women of all classes took part.
Kick off Awbury’s Year of Natural Fibers (their theme for 2019) by joining the Philadelphia Guild of Handweavers in recreating the “sheep to wool” process, spinning and weaving on a variety of looms, from ancient to modern. Guests will have a chance to try it themselves!
Judy Donovan, a PGHW member and award winning fiber artist, will also give a short talk on the history of spinning.
Cost: Free, no registration required
Location: The Cope House at Awbury Arboretum, 1 Awbury Rd, Phila, PA 19138
