More live theater for the Falls, in three small tasty bites!

Philly Theatre Week comes to East Falls with Juniper Productions’ PLAY APPETIZERS, February 9th, 10th and 11th at Vault + Vine, a charming new shop-florist-cafe in East Falls. The event features three short plays from Philly-area playwrights — Renee Lucas Wayne, Julie Zaffarano, and Queen Lane resident Kathy Anderson (who you may recognize from East Falls Faces).

It’s Kathy Anderson’s second time with pop-up theatre in East Falls.

In September 2016, she brought her murder-mystery play TURNPIKE (co-written with Bill Felty) to Trolley Car Café for sold-out performances and delighted crowds begging for more. “It was a blast!” she told EFL, “So I’m thrilled to bring a new play to East Falls after feeling all the love for live theatre here.” said Kathy Anderson.

But that’s not the only East Falls connection for PLAY APPETIZERS — Juniper Productions is collaborating with Directors Gathering (DG), a  start-up non-profit based in Philadelphia that provides theatre directors with incubation and elevation, to provide talented directors for the plays. True story: DG’s, founder and executive director Jill Harrison is an East Falls resident (!) who suggested Vault + Vine for the venue.

“It’s a place  of personal respite and inspiration for me,” she told EFL, “I am thrilled to be collaborating with Sonya, Grayce, Kathy, and Juniper to connect Philly new plays and Directors Gathering directors with our wonderful East Falls community.”

PLAY APPETIZERS is an all-female team of producers, playwrights, and directors. So will guys still enjoy the plays? “Of course! Women typically buy more tickets and attend more theatre than men. And the plays they see are more often than not written by men. So now that we are flipping the script to produce more playwrights who are female, we’ll just have to sit back see what happens!” said producer Sonya Aronowitz.

Kathy Anderson’s play, “Sissy,” was adapted from her short story by the same name in her book, Bull and Other Stories (Autumn House Press, 2016). “I loved creating these scrappy, funny sisters. And I was so happy to put them in a play so they can carry on in front of a live audience,” Kathy Anderson said.

“I’m a fan of Kathy’s writing and also want to produce more stories featuring older women on our stages. When she shared the idea for Sissy, I was sold!” said Sonya Aronowitz.

How does “Sissy” complement the other two plays in PLAY APPETIZERS? “The plays present a range of human relationships two older sisters reuniting after decades, a rather extraordinary mother-daughter dramatic comedy, and a life-changing encounter between strangers. It’s important to have variety on the play menu,” she added.

If you like the idea of plays in cool places, check out Juniper Productions’ other Philly Theatre Week offerings  – Play Tastings (three new full-length plays at a historic Philly tavern) and Cocktail Plays (four short plays at a Lansdale restaurant PLUS a cocktail!)
