A new “dessert studio” on Indian Queen? The Sugary takes a whisk in East Falls.

We’re usually not this slow when it comes to dessert news around here, but apparently East Falls has been getting sweeter since last summer. The Sugary, a “dessert studio” on Indian Queen began baking cupcakes, cookies, and cakes in August in a commercial kitchen in the old Falls Methodist Church building (across from Fiorino’s). (Customer alert: Orders are for delivery only – they don’t yet have a retail counter.)

Founded by Lesly McDevitt, The Sugary offers a full menu of homemade, all-natural desserts, including custom orders. Whether it’s Chocolate Cream Cheese Guinness Cupcakes for St. Paddy’s or a Mimosa cake for Mother’s Day, Lesly loves creating specialty desserts for every season and occasion.

Of course, she offers a full range of standards, including Apple Whiskey Cake, Kahlua Mousse Tort, Strawberry Lemonade Cupcakes, and Poppyseed Jam Thumbprint Cookies to name a few.

Her bliss though is in creating custom orders. “I love consulting with customers and experimenting with flavor and ingredient combinations to make their requests come to life.” That creative freedom is why she quit her job last year, leaving behind a 14-year career as a pastry chef at some high-end shops. There just weren’t enough opportunities to fully express her talents.

A self-described “Pinterest Girl,” she draws inspiration from the many dessert creations she finds. “I experiment with them and make them my own,” she says. Like when she created her Guinness cupcakes. (She also came up with a Lucky Charms cupcake too!!)

We know what you’re thinking, when can I swing by? The Sugary isn’t yet a “stop by” kind of place, unless you’d like to consult with Lesly about a custom order (contact her by phone or email to schedule an appointment). “We’d definitely like to have a retail counter in a year or two, but for now we’re focused on online and custom orders and growing the business.”

They’re off to a great start – you can find The Sugary’s sweets at three DiBruno Brothers locations downtown and some upscale places like the Penn’s View hotel and The Nest (a children’s play center). But she’d love to boost business locally too – that’s why she’s offering free delivery to the 19129 zip code.

She’s also hoping to partner with local businesses – event planners, florists, caterers and others, particularly in the wedding industry.

“We love being in the Falls and the more we can get the word out locally, the better. This neighborhood is really starting to grow and we’re hoping to grow right along with it.”

How Sweet It Is! A Taste of the Sugary at the Top of the Falls 

The Sugary will be adding some sweet to the Top of the Falls rooftop soiree at the Falls Center on June 9, with a specialty cookie lineup:

  • Cornmeal lime with margarita glaze
  • Chocolate marshmallow
  • Triple chocolate espresso
  • Blueberry lemon shortbread

    How nice—Zake’s Cakes had their very successful start where Fiorino’s is now. Marlene needed a place to expand. She was making fab cheesecakes for Philly restaurants in her home. The place was once a corner store. Joe, my husband, was new in RE, but he felt this would be great for EF. That had to be over 30 years ago….history repeats itself. Wish them much success….
