How to Help a Creaky Kitty

The signs of arthritis can be hard to read in cats. Dr Patten clues you in to the symptoms and offers some remedies.

As cats age they are prone to developing certain illnesses, arthritis being a main one. Arthritis is common in older cats and is often not noticed by owners. Cat owners must keep a close eye on their cats to notice signs of illness because often they can be subtle and easy to miss.

Many cats develop arthritis, a pain in their joints, as they age. Often the arthritis develops slowly so it can be hard to notice the signs. Many cats will become less active, will stop jumping on counter tops and furniture, or stop running up the stairs like they used to.

Some cats may start defecating and urinating outside of the litter box because they have trouble jumping into the litter box. If you notice some of these signs in your cat, bring your cat to a veterinarian for a full evaluation. Arthritis can be diagnosed with a physical exam and sometimes radiographs.

The good news is that arthritis can be effectively managed with joint supplements, pain medication, and weight loss. Omega fatty acids, such as those found in fish oil, can reduce the inflammation associated with arthritis, and supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin can help repair cartilage in the joints.

There are multiple different types of pain medication that can be safely used in cats to reduce their pain level and improve their quality of life. Maintaining a healthy weight will also improve your cat’s mobility and pain level. An overweight cat has more weight pushing on their joints and this makes the arthritis more painful.
