East Falls doesn’t often set style trends but this weekend, all eyes were on nails by Koco after a write-up in Sunday’s Inquirer.
So this weekend as hoards of beer lovers descended on our neighborhood for Wissahickon Brewing Company’s grand opening, the Philadelphia Inquirer called us out as a hot spot for fashion-forward nail art.
Elizabeth Wellington’s piece on “marbling” highlights subtle stone patterns for spring manicures, like Koco Salon’s design of soft grays with a swirl of pink sparkle. While the look is fresh, the effect is actually over two decades old — first popular in the 90’s, when Koco’s owner, Onisha “O” Claire, was first getting into the nail industry.
Now 20 years later, O’s overcome with gratitude and enthusiasm for her profession that’ll resonate with anyone else who’s doing what they love.

“The fact that I remember marble nails from 20 years ago just touches my heart,” O went Live on Facebook after a long day at the salon Sunday — she was in her car, still wearing her smock but she wanted to check in about the Philly.com article, and share some her personal story.
O was always college-bound, but her mother insisted that she learn how to “make money with her hands” first. O loved doing nails, so she paid her own way through nail tech school before getting her MBA. And 7 years ago after a career in finance, O returned full-time to her earliest passion with Koco Salon on Ridge Avenue.
Today, she employs nine nail techs who create beautiful nail art that Koco’s customers rave about. O’s proud of her business and excited to come to work every day, “It’s so special knowing something I created can give people such joy and connectivity,” she says in the feed above, “I love doing nails just as much today as I did 20 years ago.”
