Butterflies of Love

Full day of family fun for honoring loved ones and sharing joy to be alive.

Neighbors from East Falls, Manayunk, Roxborough – and all over NW Philly – came out for VNA Hospice of Philadelphia’s 8th Annual Butterfly Release and Community Celebration of Life. At least 100 people of all ages enjoyed hot dogs, pretzels, water ice, face painting, kid’s activities, and local vendors offering everything from free neck massages to caricatures, plus delectable samples from Simon Says Brownies and Fifth of a Farm Creations. DJ and live Mummers string band, too.

For the butterfly release, little triangle-shaped envelopes were passed around. Each contained a fragile “painted lady” butterfly (from a nursery in New England). Participants were instructed how to gently and safety release their butterfly, and after a moment of acclimation, hundreds of butterflies fluttered their wings and flew skyward. A beautiful and life-affirming sight!

TRUE STORY: Butterflies are a symbol of hope and in many cultures represent the soul – a fitting memorial for a loved one who has passed. Proceeds from the sale of butterflies were donated to VNA’s Hospice programs.

Event organizer Maureen Murphy (VNA’s senior VP for development/communication) was thrilled by the turnout, and looking forward to growing this event into an even bigger celebration of joy and remembrance. “It’s also a great opportunity for community members to engage with each other and with area businesses,” she said. Big thanks to sponsors & participants including VNA of Philadelphia, ShopRite, Phila Rock Gym, The Local, Rawk U Music, Sankhya Yoga, and the Philadelphia Fire Department.
