A Ton of Turkey!

State Reps Stephen Kinsey and Isabella Fitzgerald kicked off the Season of Giving with a free community dinner November 17th – a full turkey feast with all the trimmings!

In its 6th year, “Feeding 1000 for Thanksgiving” lived up to its name this year — and then some. Rep Stephen Kinsey’s Facebook page reported they served over 1800 meals, including 700+ meal deliveries to seniors throughout the community. Sponsors included PECO, Brown’s Shop-Rite, Einstein Healthcare Network, and many other local business and organizations.

On addition to a truly impressive spread, this event also featured tables offering swag and information about state-related programs and services. And raffles! The Corinthian Education Center was packed with guests of all ages, sitting together at big round tables. A live DJ kept the party jumping.

According to Wanda Walker, owner of Read Ready Day Care/Early Learning Center and community activist extraordinaire, the event not only satisfied a need, but raised spirits as well — “Many of us are struggling, but it doesn’t seem so bad when you focus on helping others and you keep believing in the good of people. Together we stand, divided we fall.”

We asked Wanda to suggest some ways neighbors can get involved to help the less fortunate or just to keep up on community developments, and she highly recommends:

  • 39th Police District Advisory CouncilWe have a terrific community outreach schedule year-round.”
    2201 West Hunting Park Ave. (215) 686-3390. www.phillypolice.com
  • Neighbors Against the Gas PlantsThe proposed plant has a zoning date and we need the community to come out against SEPTA polluting an already overly-polluted Nicetown. People wanting to get involved can connect through the group’s Facebook page or go to the offices of city and state representatives for up-to-date community information.”

Big thanks to state reps Kinsey and Fitzgerald, and to all the volunteers who came together to make this day such a success! For information on how you can help support future community events (including sponsorship and volunteering), contact Rep. Kinsey’s office at 215-849-6592.
